Effect of Kefir on irritable bowel syndrome?

According to studies, there is a positive effect of kefir on Irritable bowel syndrome patients. IBS has become one of the most common complaints among the urban population.

About 8% of city people have a high chance of being affected by it. Irritable bowel syndrome consists of tummy pain coupled with too little or too much bowel movement, i.e. diarrhoea or constipation.

Though IBS is not a critical illness, it puts a damper on your lifestyle. It may affect your work-life, force you to take sick leave often and may also impact on your daily activities.

Apart from belly aches, some people may suffer from stomach cramping, a feeling of bloating and protruding bellies due to IBS. Follow your doctor’s suggestion to get rid of the primary symptoms.

After that, you can start healing your gut. Kefir, a probiotic drink may help alleviate many of the problems related to IBS. Kefir helps with irritable bowel syndrome by working on the causes of the complaint.

As per clinical studies, kefir helps reduce irritable bowel syndrome. Here is one more study on kefir

If you are lactose tolerant, fermented milk or milk kefir is an excellent way to heal your gut.

In case you are not lactose tolerant, you can opt for water kefir as a way to replenish your gut flora. Most of the IBS problems can be healed effectively by restoring the health of your small intestine.

Prebiotic and probiotics foods play a significant role in ensuring the gut flora is optimal. Along with consuming probiotics, it is essential to reduce stress in your life. You should remove any food item that encourages inflammation.

Avoid freezer meals, fried food, fast food, and other processed junk. By including lots of veggies, fruits, probiotics like kefir, kombucha, kimchi, and others, you can improve your gut health.

Follow your doctor’s suggestions on medication.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may not have a permanent cure. But, by carefully managing your diet and habits, you can enjoy your life to the fullest.

How to use kefir if you have IBS?

Many people are confused about how to use kefir with IBS symptoms. Here is one of the tested ways to work with kefir when you are suffering from this disease.

First, figure out if your stomach can tolerate milk/curd. Some people experience severe IBS symptoms when they ingest curd. If you are one of them, you could try water kefir or coconut water kefir.

In case your stomach does not have a disturbing reaction to curd, you can try milk kefir. Since both are fermented milk products, if you can handle one, you can take the other.

Second, get on the FODMAPS diet and see if it helps in reducing your IBS symptoms. Another option would be to try eliminating one food item at a time and test for IBS reaction.

  1. I tried kefer but only for a week. It says lactose friendly on the bottle. I will continue to take kefer and my friend told me about. Hope it works because I have been bloated for 7 months

    • If you have lactose issues, switch to water kefir or coconut water kefir. in rare cases, kefir can give you bloating, in such situation, try a lower ferment and smaller doses.
